PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma injections can offer patients some significant benefits when it comes to helping restore the skin in your face. PRP utilizes human blood that is processed to increase the platelets at the injection sites. Platelets are naturally occurring in our own bodies, and they help the body to clot and heal.
While clotting might not seem like it will help rejuvenate your skin, the research suggests that it helps to signal the body to heal that specific area. This means that the increase in platelet densities in specific areas triggers the body to release reparative cells that help tissue repair and speed up the healing process.
Our blood is not simply composed of only blood cells, but platelets only make up about 1 percent of the total volume in our blood. While this may seem pretty insignificant, platelets are the body’s first response to help heal an area. While platelets are initially involved in clotting the wound to stop the loss of blood, they also attract stem cells to attach to the area. Stem cells are specific cells that can adapt to their surroundings and help to heal tissue and create new tissue in the area.
Research suggests that the injection of platelets into the body triggers the same response as a wound. However, because there is no true wound, the healing process simply targets the damaged skin cells and leaves you with a more youthful and vibrant appearance.
At Belviso, we pride ourselves on ensuring that the work we do gives the maximum benefit for every patient. For that reason, we want to conduct an initial appointment with you to go over your desired results and the current condition of your skin. Even if you come into our office determined to have a certain procedure completed, we may find that your expectations do not line up with the reality of that procedure. Instead, we may discuss your expectations, or suggest a product that more closely aligns with your needs. The PRP process is no different.
Not every patient is a great candidate for PRP, and although you may want to have the procedure completed, we will work with you to explain the rationale behind your options. However, if we conduct your initial assessment and find that you are a candidate for PRP, we can go over the entire process, discuss what the outcomes will look like for you, and set up your treatment schedule.
First, PRP utilizes your own blood for the process. This helps to reduce and eliminate the potential chances of getting an infection or having your body reject the injection. We simply collect a few vials of your own blood and then run it through a centrifuge to isolate the specific platelets we want. The rest of the blood is discarded. Once the platelets have been isolated, we can inject them into the areas that have been specifically identified in your treatment plan.
PRP is considered a medical procedure, and anytime that there is a break in the skin, there is a chance of infection, pain at the injection site, and nerve or tissue damage. While these risks are generally low, it is important to keep a close eye on things following your procedure. If you develop any significant rashes or begin to have a fever, you should seek medical help.
